In the world of thrash metal, there are notable scenes that come to mind. The San Francisco Bay Area, the Altenessen area in Germany and the New York scene to name a few. Scotland isn't the first thrash nation to come to mind, but in recent years it's been growing. Leading the charge is Edinburgh headbangers Ifreann. Following their debut single release in 2017 and last year's killer Unearthly EP, the band have been picking up the pace with their latest EP Desecration – released in February.
Opening track “Of Blade & Blackened Wing”, which the band released a video for prior to the release of the EP, is a storming statement. Beginning with a relentless blasting thrash riff before the main harmonised melodic line, the song sticks in the banging head straight away. Ifreann keep it simple but incredibly catchy especially when showcasing their melodic flair.
Follow up number “Raised in Hate” sees founding rhythm section Euan Henderson and Jacob Nicolson flexing their muscles with a thick bass riff intro atop rumbling drum work. It's hard not to headbang along when the guitars kick in setting the swinging main riff in full motion. The longer solo section highlights the guitar duo of Ben Sanders and Alina Levanova, especially their harmony in serving a neo-classical flavour to the sound.
The final half of Desecration continues the trend of hooky headbangers. “Messiah”'s simple slamming riffs coupled with vocalist Ian Gil's “Why do you lie to me?” refrain are certain to get the fans raging. Closer “Crushed By Tyranny” is a killer mosh pit-spawner with its stomping verses, shoutalong chorus and pounding main riff.
Ifreann keep getting better and better with Desecration. A lot of modern thrash sounds tired but Ifreann present a sound that's familiar, yet fresh. It's clear that they're growing from their previous releases with their expanding musicianship on display. Desecration is a solid set of thrashing tunes that's sure to elevate Ifreann to greater heights going forward.
